NDIS Funding Is Now Released Every 3 Months: Here’s What You Need to Know

As of 19 May 2025, the NDIA is introducing a gradual rollout of three-month funding periods for participants receiving new or reassessed plans.

Previously, participants received access to all their plan funding upfront – usually for a 12-month plan. While this gave some flexibility, many participants found it hard to budget, often resulting in underspending or funds running out too early.

🔄 What’s Changing?

  • Funding will now be released in quarterly blocks (e.g., every 3 months)

  • The total amount of funding stays the same

  • This will only apply to new or reassessed plans, and the NDIA will consult with participants about their needs and preferences first

💡 Why This Change?

According to the NDIA:

We’ve heard from participants these 12-month funding periods can make it hard to budget, increasing the risk of overspending or running out of funds.

This new approach aims to:

  • Help with consistent budgeting

  • Minimise risks of overspending

  • Reduce fraud or financial exploitation

  • Support more sustainable service engagement
