NDIS Plan Extensions & Surprise Reviews: What Participants Need to Know
Recent events in the Perth disability community have been deeply upsetting, and our thoughts are with every participant, family, and provider affected.
Over the past few weeks, we’ve noticed a concerning pattern emerging. Many participants are receiving plan extensions, followed shortly by unexpected phone calls from NDIS Planners described as “check-ins.” In some cases, these conversations have effectively functioned as plan reviews, without participants being clearly informed — often without Support Coordinators present — and have resulted in reductions to funding.
These experiences can feel confusing, stressful, and overwhelming. But it’s important to know this: you do have rights.
Your Rights During NDIS Planning Conversations
If you have Support Coordination funding, you are entitled to advocacy and informed decision-making. You can absolutely:
Ask whether a conversation is part of a plan review
Request that your Support Coordinator be included
Ask for time to gather and submit evidence before any decisions are made
Reschedule the conversation if you need time to prepare or feel overwhelmed
You are not being difficult by asking questions.
You are protecting your supports.
Clear communication and proper advocacy can make a significant difference to outcomes.
Why Support Coordinators Matter — Especially During Reviews
One of the fundamental responsibilities of a Support Coordinator is to support participants and families through plan reviews and planning conversations.
Recently, we’ve seen participants being encouraged to speak directly with Planners or Local Area Coordinators (LACs) during these “check-ins,” without their Support Coordinator involved. This places participants at a disadvantage — often without realising it.
We strongly recommend involving your Support Coordinator in any planning or review-related discussions, just as you would involve a trusted advisor in any other major decision. Support Coordinators help ensure conversations are transparent, evidence-based, and aligned with your actual needs and goals.
Be Prepared — Even During a Plan Extension
Even if you’re expecting a straightforward plan extension, it’s wise to keep your evidence up to date and on file. Reviews can occur unexpectedly, and being prepared helps you feel confident, informed, and supported if plans change suddenly.
This might include:
Allied health reports
Progress notes
Letters outlining functional impacts
Updated goals or changes in circumstances
Preparation isn’t pessimism — it’s empowerment.
Reach Out Early — You Don’t Have to Navigate This Alone
If you’re feeling unsure about your plan, confused by a call you’ve received, or anxious about a potential review, reach out early. Even a single conversation can provide clarity, reassurance, and direction.
At the heart of the NDIS is the idea that participants should feel supported, informed, and heard. Advocacy matters — and you deserve to have the right people beside you.
If you need guidance or simply want to talk through what’s happening with your plan, we’re here to help.
